Crescent Hockey Heroes Reach National Finals For First Time
The Crescent School’s U11 boys’ hockey team are celebrating tournament success that takes them through to the IAPS (Independent Association of Preparatory Schools) U11 Boys’ National Hockey Finals for the very first time in the school’s history.
The boys secured their place in the final after a challenging series of matches and a hard fought battle at the regional finals on Friday 10 February. The Crescent team had travelled to Repton School in Derbyshire to take on the best hockey teams in the Midlands/North area.
Matt Phillips, Crescent PE Teacher commented, “Being a small school, with no astro of our own, we are always up against it when playing the much bigger schools. However, with determination, belief and a strong work ethic up to and including the tournament, we hoped that we could make history and we certainly did!”
He continued, “After a faltering start with two losses and a draw, our boys rallied to beat Radcliffe, Yarm and Fairfield Schools, which took them to the quarter finals against Stamford. Although the boys had the better of the play, the match went to penalty shuffles and at 2-2 it went to sudden death, fortunately for us the ball eventually spun over the line to clinch that match. We were then up against Kent College and yet more penalty shuffles, happily after the fourth round of shuffles our goalkeeper made the save that sent us into the final. Although we lost in the final 0-2, the boys played admirably throughout the day and crucially secured the place in the National Finals.”
The National Finals take place at Repton on Monday 13 March, in the meantime the team will be training hard and practising those crucial penalties in anticipation of another momentous day.
Congratulations to all our hockey heroes who came from across years 4, 5 and 6: James Robinson (Captain), Chris Gibson (GK), Ed Thomas, Alex Frere, Monty Hinde, Fin Calder, Matthew Browne and Oliver Bell.
