The Crescent School's U11 Girls Gymnastics team travelled to Adcote School in Shrewsbury to take part in the ISA Midlands Gymnastics Competition on Thursday 30 November.
Gymnastics is a new sport for Crescent, Rachel McCollin, Head of Girls Games, introduced a new gymnastics club to the school just this term. So this was the first time that Crescent had entered a gymnastics competition and the team were a little over-awed but, after entering the huge arena, the girls' initial nerves settled quickly.
After presenting to the British Gymnastics judging panel and completing a quick five-minute team warm-up the girls started the competition. The first element was the vault and the girls performed well, Mrs McCollin commented, “Their vaults were strong showing good flight on to the vault and some controlled shapes and landings off.” Then the team moved on to the floor, where thicker spongy mats caused a few troubles for the girls’ spins but with a little practice they were soon overcome. Again the girls produced some fabulous routines showing flexibility, strength and balance.
The competition was a wonderful new experience for all the participants and on their first outing Crescent School was pleased to finish in 5th position overall as a team. Mrs McCollin was delighted and continued, “Well done to all involved. The girls have shown great commitment and dedication to practice and should be pleased with what they have achieved.”
